This is essentially what the "Behind-the-Scenes" column is all about. It's peaking behind the curtain to catch a glimpse of the Hollywood magic that draws us in and leads us to believe that what we're seeing on screen is real. It's not the same as learning a magic trick though, where the revelation ruins the show. I'm actually more intrigued by the complexity and love that's put into the Universal Monsters like Boris Karloff's original Frankenstein.
The make-up team was lead by the legendary Jack Pierce, like many of the other incarnations of the Universal Monsters. Below, a mustache-less Pierce applies the iconic make-up to Karloff while detail is being added to The Monster's hand. This October, in celebration of Halloween, I have a whole batch of rare Frankenstein BTS pictures that I can't wait to share.
