Though we don't think Citizen Kane is as great of a movie as everyone else, we still can't deny it's role in film history. It's by no means a bad movie either but I wish I could have first experienced it in the time period that it was released. The most amazing thing to me is the fact that Orson Welles starred in, directed, and helped write (or maybe not but that's a controversy for another day) the movie at only 25 years old.
Below is a series of photos, all featuring Welles, during the production of Citizen Kane. First features Orson Welles directing from a wheelchair which he needed after falling down a flight of stairs and breaking his ankle amid filming his masterpiece. This is followed by a shot of him looking through the camera while in full costume and a candid image of him, co-writer Herman Mankiewicz, and collaborator John Houseman discussing the screenplay. I have quite a few other rare photos from this classic film that I will definitely post in a future article.
