DVD / Blu Review:

Issue #009 — September 27 th 2011

New Releases September 27th 2011

[Our editor, Emily Bloom, brings you the best new releases in her "DVD / Blu Review" article. No filler, no hype, only movies and TV shows we personally buy.]

Charlton Heston slips in two titles this week. One is a true classic the other more modern (if you consider 21 years ago "modern"). Apparently Buster Keaton thought this was a good idea so he released a double feature today as well. Ray Harryhausen got word of Keaton's trickery and released his own double feature but threw in The Most Dangerous Game as a bonus DVD. But Gamera tops them all with a three-pack on Blu-ray for only $12.99. So who got the "Pick of the Week"? If you see anything you would like to buy, please support us by clicking through to Amazon from the links below. Our suggestions of each title are honest opinions with the only intention being to direct you to great movies.

Pick of the Week: Ben-Hur "50th Ann. Ultimate Collector's Edition" [Blu]
Ben-Hur 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector's Edition Blu-ray cover art

The absolute only thing I can question about the Ben-Hur (50th Anniversary Ultimate Collector's Edition) set is why, in 2011, we're getting a 50th Anniversary set of a movie from 1959… Maybe it's the 50th-ish Anniversary. Anyway, this is a must for any and all movie lovers! There aren't many other movies I would rather watch on the wonderful format of Blu-ray. What better than the chariot race and the back of Jesus Christ's head in 1080p? As a huge fan of the massive Biblical movies, I say go out and buy this Epic Edition today. It's also a strong contender for the "Pick of the Year".

This "Ultimate Collector's Edition" (and an anniversay edition at that) is stuffed with all the amazing bonus content from the previous four-disc DVD release as well as new material. The new documentary focuses on Charlton Heston and his connection with Ben-Hur and features home movies as well as his family and fellow cast reminiscing. The next documentary focuses on the movie itself and its impact on film and filmmakers (including George Lucas talking about how it affected him). The THIRD documentary is more of a "making of…" and also clocks in at almost an hour! But the real treat? The 128-page hardcover reproduction of Heston's diaries written during the filming of Ben-Hur!

I highly recommend all three releases in the "Buy It" column this week. Ray Harryhausen always delivers and if you're slightly interested in things like Gamera, it's a steal for three Blu-ray movies for only $12.99. Of course, Charlton Heston as Long John Silver is somthing you immediately know whether you'd like it or not. I had to include How I Met Your Mother because it is by far the best sitcom in a long, long time (I'm holding out for the "Complete Series" set). But this week also brings more crappy Halloween titles like the 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' sequels.
